Burn the Fat

Does Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle really work?

The Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle weight loss diet is a program developed by bodybuilder and trainer Tom Venuto. The program claims to help you lose weight permanently and increase metabolism through a combination of diet and strength training.

Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle is very similar to a lot of strength training programs out there. Tom Venuto is extremely knowledgeable about nutrition and diet, due to the fact that he is a certified nutritionist and success coach. (Update: My research has shown that Tom has a degree in exercise science and two certifications; "Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist" (CSCS) and “Certified Personal Trainer” from the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA).)

The first section of the book is devoted to dispelling a number of common weight loss myths, and this is an excellent introduction to the book, because it proves that the diet is credible and is not trying to sell you on any gimmicks.

Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle makes it clear that most rapid weight loss diets help you to lose weight by losing water and muscle mass, which is not the same thing as fat loss and needs to be distinguished. Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle makes it clear that the goal of the program is NOT weight loss but fat loss. That means that as you burn fat, you will also be increasing your muscle mass, and will therefore not always technically be losing weight. Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle explains that this is the real key to looking slim and feeling good, not fad diets that cause you to lose an extreme amount of weight in a short amount of time.

The only real downside to the program is that, at 340 pages, Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle is a very heavy read. The beginning of the book is crammed with hundreds of facts and statistics about everything from fat-storing enzymes to body fat testing. While this information is certainly useful, it is completely too much information to give someone looking to start a simple weight loss program. Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle bogs you down with percentages and numbers that are not really essential to the success of your diet, and may overwhelm some readers. Another problem is that the program is clearly designed for, and targeted towards, men. The program is very scientific and doesn’t address the real reason that people (and especially women) gain weight, which is usually because of their emotions. Most people fail at their weight loss efforts not because they don’t know how to follow the program, but because they don’t know how to direct their diet toward meeting their body’s physical needs over its emotional ones. Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle lacks real time and attention to this issue.

Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle is also obviously going to be more successful for men, who have a much greater ability of gaining muscle mass. Women biologically have much more fat than muscle on their body, so the effects of strength training programs are limited. Women looking to lose weight should probably consult a more nutrition-focused program instead of a strength training one.

Conclusion: Overall, Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle is an excellent program. It is extremely meticulous and scientifically accurate in its theories and methodology. However, your specific needs may call for a program focused on a different method of losing weight, so consider your options before committing to the Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle weight loss diet.
